Date set for mountain bike trails to open at Big White

KELOWNA - With snow slow to leave Big White, the mountain bike season at the resort won’t be starting until August.

The first trails will open August 4, according to a press release, with more being opened as the season continues. Big White’s president, Peter Plimmer, says he wants to keep building the mountain biking aspect of the mountain.

“It’s not often that we wish the snow away, but it has provided us with some challenges this year,” he says in the release. “The focus is to continue building this season and next season and focus on trail quality and consistency.”

Once trails are open, riders will be using the Bullet Express lift to get to trail heads. A top-to-bottom trail will be one of the trails opening on day one, along with trails for all skill levels.

Construction crews have been working on the mountain bike trails since last year, as long as there isn’t snow on the ground. This year, managing water flow down the mountain as the snow pack melts is important and has created challenges as the snowpack was quite high late in the winter and early spring.

Prices for the new mountain bike features haven’t been released yet. The park is expected to be open Friday to Sundays and holiday Mondays. Management expect to open the bike trails earlier in 2018.
