VERNON - Vernon officials were quick to respond today to reports of damage at a local cemetery after concerns that a city snow plow was the cause.

Resident George Serhan was visiting Pleasant Valley Cemetery, where his father is buried, when he noticed at least one gravestone that appeared to have been run over and chipped.

“You can see tracks running right overtop of it,” he says. “Why did that happen? There’s no need for that to happen. When I saw that I just shook my head.”

Judging by the tracks, Serhan thinks there could be further damage discovered once the snow melts.

After seeing the photos, the city’s public works manager James Rice immediately inspected the site and confirmed today, March 16, the damage was likely caused by snow plowing.

“Crews will be repairing the damage later this spring,” Rice says. “We will also be taking a closer look at this issue to determine what changes need to be made to ensure that this does not happen again.”

Serhan says the gravestones should be marked in the winter so that plows don’t accidentally run over them.
