KELOWNA - A 14-year-old discovered behind the wheel of a rental vehicle during an RCMP traffic stop in West Kelowna was acting as designated driver for his 47-year-old dad who had been drinking, according to an RCMP media release.

The boy and his dad were pulled over in a red Chevy Impala on Bartley Road near Capri Road at around 10:53 p.m. Oct. 23. Mounties say the car was seen leaving a nearby liquor store. When police pulled the driver over, they discovered the car was a rental vehicle and the young unlicenced driver was chauffering his father.

Not only was the boy unlicenced, but the rental car agreement showed the father was the only approved operator of the vehicle, so police immediately took the car off the road for the rental to company to retrieve.

The teen, who was not old enough to get a licence under B.C. law received a violation ticket for driving without a licence. His father was issued a ticket for allowing an unlicenced minor to drive.
