VERNON - A British Columbia man accused of violence against women has lost his bid for bail in a courtroom in Vernon yesterday, Nov. 14, where spectators responded with applause.

Curtis Sagmoen, 38, will remain in custody while he awaits a trial on charges related to an incident last year when he allegedly threatened a woman with a firearm while disguising his face.

About a dozen people who cheered when a judge rejected Sagmoen's request for bail held a rally on the courthouse steps earlier to denounce violence against women.

Sagmoen is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 10 for a preliminary inquiry into separate charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm.

The charges were laid after police said allegations were made by women who worked as escorts and advertised their services online.

None of the allegations against Sagmoen have been proven in court.
