Curtis Sagmoen pleads guilty in Vernon court to possessing cell phone, drugs

Curtis Sagmoen leaving the Vernon courthouse, today, June 19.

A North Okanagan man who made headlines in 2017 when the remains of the body of an 18-year-old girl were found on his large rural property has pleaded guilty to breaching his probation.

Today, June 28, at the Vernon courthouse Curtis Sagmoen's lawyer Lisa Helps confirmed that her client would plead guilty to four breaches of his probation and will not fight the charges at a trial.

Sagmoen has a history of violence toward women and has been previously convicted of driving an ATV into a sex worker, and in another case ambushing an escort he'd called to his rural property and pointing a gun at them

Sagmoen, who is on bail, didn't appear in court today but Helps said he would be pleading guilty to four of 14 charges for breaching his probation.

What took place isn't publicly known, but the breaches date back to April 26 and April 28, 2022.

Sagmoen pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing a cell phone, and another charge of possessing drugs and breaching a no-contact order.

It's unclear who Sagmoen contacted to breach the order, but his probation did prohibit him from contacting sex workers.

Sagmoen's probation dates back to June 2020 when he was convicted of driving a quad into a sex worker and placed on very strict probation for 36 months. He avoided jail time for the offence having spent a lengthy amount of time in custody prior to the trial.

The conviction came less than a year after he was convicted of ambushing a sex worker and pointing a gun at her. Both incidents took place within days of each other in the summer of 2017.

Months later in the fall of that year, police discovered the remains of the body of 18-year-old Traci Genereaux at the property. No one has ever been charged in connection with the discovery of Genereaux's body, and police have not said how she died.

Since being released from custody in December of 2019, Sagmoen has also been charged with assaulting a police officer, although the charge was later dropped.

Vernon RCMP also made the unusual move of issuing a public statement warning sex workers to avoid the rural Salmon River Road property where he lives, which is owned by his parents.

Just weeks before Sagmoen was arrested for breaching his probation, a neighbour told iNFOnews.ca they had seen sex workers and a pimp near the property.

Sagmoen will be sentenced at a later date.
