"The studio has that new show smell."

So said Ben Mulroney as CTV premiered its replacement for "Canada AM" Monday. The new "Your Morning," which originates from CTV's downtown Toronto studios, was fast-paced and pretty much mistake-free, if not especially memorable.

Mulroney was joined by former Global and CBC news anchor Anne-Marie Mediwake, along with Lindsey Deluce of Toronto's "CP24 Breakfast" and Kelsey McEwen of "CTV Morning Live Calgary." Melissa Grelo of CTV's daytime talk show "The Social" got to sleep in and join the gang for the last hour.

Everyone seemed over-caffeinated Monday. First shows always speed up on adrenaline.

Here's a blow-by-blow of the premiere episode:

6:03 a.m.: Much fuss was made over Canada's showing at the Rio Summer Olympic Games. Since CTV wasn't the official broadcaster, stills were shown of the closing ceremonies and other events. Mulroney lauded "Lucky" Penny Oleksiak, Canada's gold medal swimmer, who will be on the show Wednesday along with trampoline champion Rosie MacLennan, who successfully defended the gold medal she won in London in 2012.

6:06: Meanwhile, via email, City puts out a release pointing out their long-running morning show "Breakfast Television" is No. 1 in Toronto and across Canada. Let the games begin!

6:07: First of several news and weather updates. Deluce reads a report on a whale bone discovery. McEwen's floral prom dress fights with the busy weather map behind her. She cheerfully announces the first snowfall of the year, high in the Rockies.

6:16: The first guest is a volunteer Skyped in from Canada's Olympic village in Rio. The volunteer tells us "Rio is a beautiful place."

"That really was a great first interview for the show!" gushes Mulroney.

That's followed by a pre-packaged clip of morning show hosts in the United States and Britain, including Piers Morgan, George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts, giving shout-outs to the "Your Morning" team. Everybody loves this so much it runs twice.

6:29: Mulroney informs viewers that "we're having a lot of fun already on our first show." He mentions his dad Brian used to be prime minister and that he was on "Canadian Idol," so, yes, he's travelled all over Canada.

6:30: Talk moves to Saturday's concert in Kingston, Ont., by the Tragically Hip. The hosts repeat CBC's release that 11.7 million Canadians watched. The context here is that was the total reach, but the average audience was just over four million.

Mulroney plugs his upcoming interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

6:35: News veteran Mediwake can't get a word in edgewise at the loosey-goosey desk segments. She tries to steer the show back to an agenda.

6:46: TSN's Kate McKenna is brought in to recap the Olympics. Everyone agrees U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte is a heel after he admitted to over-exaggerating a story about being robbed at gunpoint.

6:56: Another weather update. The graphics are clean and easy to read.

7 a.m.: CTV's Peter Akman also weighs in from Rio. We learn Oleksiak is very tall.

7:07: Finally we get to Mulroney's interview with Trudeau. There's no idle chatter, no talk of how they both once lived in the same house. Mulroney sticks to serious questions about the murder of First Nations' women, police raids and pot laws.

7:16: After a break, more Trudeau. Mulroney lightens things up, asks the prime minister if his kids are ready to go back to school. Mulroney always seems most comfortable and natural with his peers.

7:30: Back to the news. Somewhere a snake is stuck down a sewer, being fed mice cakes. The desk banter is slowing down as the caffeine wears off. These three-hour morning shows are a marathon, not a sprint.

7:36: Viewers get a glimpse of the stage setup in what was once the MuchMusic parking lot.

7:39: CTV Olympic anchor Brian Williams rocks the sockless moc summer look with a suit. He comes prepared as always, tells us the Olympics are about the athletes, not "the fat cats who run it."

7:49: Evan Solomon sits down with Mulroney to plug "Question Period."

8 a.m.: Grelo joins the other four around the desk. The five brown Tim Hortons cups can't be missed. Also, why move downtown if there is no street view in the background? The big blue electronic wall behind everybody could still be in the old "Canada AM" studio north of Highway 401.

8:14: McEwen does a weather hit outdoors from the lip of the stage and handles it with ease. Everybody loves her cowboy boots.

8:15: We go back to Mediwake's hometown in Brooks, Alta. Her old high-school VP is now an MP. The cast mock her big hair back in the day. Tuesday it's Mulroney and Ottawa.

8:31: The shout-outs from other morning show hosts are replayed. We see that Roberts is about a half-metre taller than Mediwake.

8:34: Grelo takes us back to the iHeartRadio outdoor stage where country rockers Florida Georgia Line perform. The American band seems an odd choice after all the Hip-mania, but it shows "Your Morning" bookers plan to stick with what's hot globally. A crowd of 700, many there since 6 a.m., cheer them on.

8:41: Grelo interviews the two lead singers. Someone left their lights on in the parking lot.

8:51: Another song from Florida Georgia Line. Instead of going out singing, the show seems a bit derailed by the band segment.

For the most part, "Your Morning" succeeds in looking different than "Canada AM." The big question remains: Who is CTV marketing this show to? Will the moms and dads who watched the old show embrace this new one? Will younger viewers who best relate to the new crew's casual desk chatter get up for this?
