911: regulator seeks public input into ways to improve emergency phone service

OTTAWA - The federal telecom regulator has begun a public consultation about the future of 911 emergency phone services in Canada.

The CRTC says it's looking for ways to improve 911 services in light of changing technology to next-generation networks based on Internet Protocol.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says it will review the findings of the public consultation by the end of next May.

The consultation is being done ahead of a formal CRTC review in 2014-2015.

The CRTC notes that the 911 system is relied upon by thousands of Canadians during emergency situations.
