Calgary murder trial of parents in diabetic teen death to resume next month

CALGARY - A murder trial for parents of a teenaged boy who died of starvation and complications from untreated diabetes three years ago will resume next month.

Emil Radita, 59, and his 54-year-old wife Rodica Radita are charged with first degree murder in the 2013 death of their 15-year-old son.

The trial, which began at the beginning of June, was adjourned over the summer and will now continue Sept. 12.

Alexandru Radita — who was one of eight children — weighed just 37 pounds, was wearing a diaper and had ulcers all over his body when he died.

Court has heard the boy's family refused to accept their son had diabetes and failed to treat the disease before he was hospitalized near death in British Columbia in 2003.

The family, which was under the eye of B.C. child welfare services, fell off the map before they resurfaced in Alberta in 2009.
