A handful of shopping carts were ablaze last night in a parking lot on Kamloops's North Shore.

The fire broke out behind a laundromat in the 100 block of Knox Street at approximately 12:21 a.m. today, Dec. 14, according to Kamloops Fire Rescue platoon captain Chris Petrula.

While no one was injured and no property was damaged, there was concern about a nearby gas line.

“Shopping carts were burning close to a gas line, but crews were able to knock the fires down quickly and protect it,” Petrula said.

One truck responded to the scene and the crew quickly put out the flames.

“The fire appeared to have been started in a pile of clothing and miscellaneous items," Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said.

Resident Kristen Caravetta watched the fire outside the McCleaners laundromat from her nearby home.

“After the department put the fires out I saw two people beside a tent next to the burnt debris with a small fire going at around 4 a.m.,” she said. “I was going to call the fire department again but they left pretty soon after.”

Police are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage related to the fire to contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2022-44257.
