SPALLUMCHEEN - A car crash earlier this month claimed the life of a child.

Police say a six-year-old boy died as a result of the Jan. 16 crash on Highway 97A, south of Pleasant Valley Cross Road.

RCMP spokesperson Const. Kelly Brett says it was a tragic accident.

“This is an incredibly tragic event that occurred and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Traffic Services are not considering charges against the driver of the tractor trailer,” Brett says. “The investigation has shown that the collision which claimed the life of this six-year-old boy, was a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this very difficult time.”

Police say the collision involved a small SUV containing three people and a semi-truck with one driver.

The driver of the SUV, the boy’s father, was sent to hospital with life threatening injuries but is expected to make a full recovery, Brett says. The mother was physically uninjured. The family is from Calgary.

The driver of the semi truck, a resident of the United States, sustained no injuries and has been cooperative with investigators, Brett says.

The six-year-old boy died at the scene of the collision.
