UPDATE: Scooter rider in critical condition after crash in Summerland on Highway 97

A person riding a scooter has been transported to the hospital with critical injuries after a crash that partially closed Highway 97 in Summerland.

The accident was on Highway 97 between between Solly Road and Rosedale Avenue this afternoon, July 21, and caused the highway's partial closure.

At about 3:15 p.m., member of the Summerland RCMP detachment, B.C. Highway Patrol and Emergency Services responded to the crash.

Police determined that a southbound SUV struck a northbound moped/scooter-type motorcycle which turned left in front of the SUV. The SUV, in an attempt to avoid the collision, collided with another northbound vehicle, according to the RCMP in a press release.

Two occupants from the SUV were transported to hospital with minor injuries, while the operator of the scooter was transported to hospital in critical condition, according to the RCMP.

B.C. Highway Patrol officer based out of Keremeos have control of the investigation with assistance from Summerland RCMP and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

At this time, no criminality is believed to have contributed to the cause of the collision.

Police ask that anyone with information on the crash, including any dashcam footage, to contact B.C. Highway Patrol in Keremeos at 250-499-2250.

The northbound left lane is closed while both southbound lanes are closed.

There is no estimated time when the road will reopen and a detour is not available, according to Drive B.C.
