Cranbrook middle school locked down over gun scare

RCMP

A school in Cranbrook was locked down yesterday afternoon after police received a report about a student carrying what looked like a gun.

Laurie Middle School in Cranbrook was locked down shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 24, after the student was seen with what looked like a gun in a school hallway, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP said officers “flooded” the area looking for the student.

They were quickly given the names of two youths who were taken into custody, and an airsoft rifle and a cap gun were seized. The two young people were released to the care and custody of their parents, police said.

“The staff and students at Laurie Middle School did an amazing job of ensuring the safety of all people inside the building,” Cranbrook RCMP media relations officer Const. Katie Forgeron said in the release. “We are thankful that this situation ended quickly with no injuries."

RCMP do not say if any charges will be laid.
