COVID-19 outbreak at Kamloops hospital grows to 76

A COVID-19 outbreak at Royal Inland Hospital has grown to include 27 patients and 49 staff members.

Interior Health announced Saturday, Jan 30, that the total number of people affected at the Kamloops hospital has increased to 76 cases, with 74 that are currently active, according to the health authority's press release.

There have been no new deaths linked to the outbreak.

On Saturday morning, Interior Health expanded the outbreak to include unit 6 North after identifying four positive cases on that unit. Although an outbreak is now declared on units 6 South and 6 North, there is no indication of COVID-19 spread to other areas of the hospital, according to the health authority.

All staff and physicians who worked on 6 North during the potentially infectious period are currently being tested for COVID-19, according to the health authority.

All staff members who have tested positive are isolating at home and none have been hospitalized.

Precautions are in place to prevent further COVID-19 transmission at the hospital, according to Interior Health.

Staffing levels are being monitored daily and plans are in place to rely on staff from other regions if necessary, according to the health authority.

Patients who need urgent or emergency should still come to the hospital and scheduled procedures are continuing.

COVID-19 self-isolation is not required after visiting the hospital, according to the health authority.
