After a steady climb over the past few weeks, the number of people living in the Interior Health region who tested positive for COVID-19 dropped in the past week.

For the week of April 11 to 17, there were 522 new cases recorded in the region, down from 676 the week before. This comes after four weeks of increases since 185 new cases were recorded in the week of March 14 to 20.

This is based on data posted on the B.C. Centre for Disease Control website.

Most of the 31 Local Health Areas in the Interior Health region showed declines, including a drop to 242 from 288 in the Central Okanagan, 44 from 96 in Kamloops, down to 41 from 56 in Vernon and a drop to 28 from 37 in Penticton.

The South Okanagan was one of the few areas that saw a significant increase, jumping to 21 from 12 cases. Enderby also went up to six from two cases.

In the province as a whole, the daily count of new cases was more than 1,000 for most days that week and still hit 1,006 yesterday, April 22.

In the past few days, the number of active cases in the province dropped to 8,733 yesterday, April 22, down from a peak of 10,081 on April 16.

Of the active cases yesterday, 796 were in the Interior Health region.

While this looks like good news, the number of hospitalizations hit a new high yesterday at 502, with 32 of those people in the Interior Health region.
