Two cyclists are setting off on a cross country bike trip to raise money for reforestation after witnessing last year’s wildfires in Kelowna.
Solene Soton and Kevin Firmin, known as The Green Bikes, are two novice cyclists who have never attempted such a long journey. They set off from Vancouver this morning and plan to ride more than 5000 km to Montreal in two months.
Their goal is to raise $10,000 to plant 10,000 trees through the non-profit One Tree Planted.
Soton and Firmin are a French couple who moved to the Okanagan last year.
They lived 50 km from the wildfires in Kelowna and saw the devastation first hand. The pair were motivated to do something to help the environment and promote eco-friendly tourism.
The Green Bikes partnered with various companies to help their cause; HI Canada, Sena, Vaude, Black+Blum, Beep Bells, Garneau, and Briden Solutions.
Soton and Firmin started in Vancouver but will be passing through the Okanagan in a few days.
