A man walking his dog in Mission Creek Regional Park at about 6:30 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 17, had a scary encounter with a cougar.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has issued a public advisory after a man noticed a cougar following him as he was walking with his large dog on a leash in the park.

The cougar lunged and tried to attack the dog but was sacred off. There were no injuries.

“While roaming pets are prey for cougars, aggressive behaviour towards a leashed dog is uncommon and concerning,” states a notice on the Conservation Officer Service Facebook page.

Regional park staff have been notified and are keeping an eye on the situation.

The posting does not say where in the park the incident happened.

Aggressive cougar behaviour should be reported to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-7277.
