RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service are investigating after a snowboarder and a skier died in two separate incidents in the Kootenays.

A man in his 30s was discovered in medical distress shortly after 12 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, in a tree well located in an out-of-bounds area of the Whitewater Ski Resort near Nelson, according an RCMP media release.

The passerby who discovered the man started CPR and called emergency crews.

“The patient was transported to secondary location within the resort, where emergency medical responders took over CPR,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in the release. “Despite all their efforts, the man was pronounced deceased by emergency paramedics.”

The deceased man has been identified as from the Central Kootenay but his name has not been released.

At the Fernie Alpine Resort just after 4:30 p.m. Jan. 17, police said a skier was found unresponsive in the snow.

The man had been skiing with another person, but they became separated and when his partner retraced their run, the man was found in the snow amongst some trees. He was from Fernie.
