Coroner investigating after body found outside in Kamloops's freezing weather

A body was found outside in Kamloops this past weekend and the person's death is being investigated by the B.C. Coroners Service. It's not clear if the person died from exposure.

The coroners service confirmed today, Nov. 10, a body was found sometime between Nov. 4 and Nov. 6, but won't say where the body was found, identify the person or provide any other details until the investigation is finished.

A spokesperson with the coroners service confirmed the body was found somewhere in Kamloops, but "cautioned" against making any connection to the cold weather.

Emergency winter shelters in Kamloops were supposed to open on Nov. 1, but they didn't open until a week later.

All the emergency shelter spaces in the city are now open.

At the former Kamloops Yacht Club shelter on Lorne Street, The Mustard Seed added a 20th bed last night bringing the total number of emergency shelter beds to 210.

Nearly all the shelters have been at capacity this week with below normal temperatures in the city, but there are still people camping outside, The Mustard Seed's Nyahsa Manyane said.

"We might really need to see more spaces opening up soon," he said. "There's been more people in the streets. We are currently seeing more new faces on a daily basis."

Manyane said the 2021 Point in Time count, which surveyed 206 homeless people in Kamloops is not only an undercount, but there's more people now than were counted last year.

Last year, a man known as Sam Mack died in the cold. Mack was homeless and a client of the Canadian Mental Health Association Kamloops, which operates several shelters and supportive housing facilities in the city. He was found downtown next to his wheelchair and his clothes were missing.
