Racist Halloween decorations, that were subject to both an RCMP and a Kelowna bylaw investigation, have now been taken down.
A display at a home on Richter Street was met with widespread condemnation for having a confederate flag and an effigy of a person hanging.
Since it was reported to officials earlier this week, and after the city and police launched investigations into the matter, the flag and the hanging person have been taken down.

“The police dealt with the flag and effigy – both of which were removed prior to bylaw officers’ attendance,” city communications officer Tom Wilson said in an emailed statement. “City bylaw officers followed up with an education piece with the owner respecting the Municipal Tree Bylaw and pursuant to the Traffic Bylaw, directed the removal of Halloween items/extension cord across sidewalk creating a safety hazard. This has now been complete.”
Jocelyn Noseworthy, with the Kelowna RCMP, said the investigation is ongoing but she was pleased to find out both items were removed.
“There’s no place in Kelowna for this kind of racist imagery, which is hurtful to people of colour and all who cherish an inclusive community,” said Mayor Colin Basran, in a press release.
