KELOWNA - A pair of con artists targeted an Okanagan senior citizen and stole her late husband's wedding band yesterday morning, police say.

The woman was sitting in her vehicle at a parking lot in the 1800 block of Dilworth Drive on March 20 when she was approached by two unknown women. They struck up a conversation with the senior citizen, which seemed well rehearsed, according to a RCMP release.

During the conversation, one of the women reached into the senior's car and offered a gold chain. Although the senior declined, the suspect placed the necklace on her neck. It's believed the suspect detached the real gold chain during this process before walking away.

The stolen chain contained the senior's wedding band along with her late husband's band. Police responded to the scene just after noon.

“It’s very troubling to hear that anyone would intentionally victimize any senior citizen in our community,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey in the press release.

Anyone with information on the suspects or the gold necklace is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
