Community celebration at Kal Beach in Vernon a hit

Jesse Vandenbrand, 7, waits in line for an autograph from his idol Curtis Lazar.

VERNON - It was a beach party to remember.

Hundreds attended an event at Kal Beach Friday featuring activities, live music and plenty of community spirit, as well as a few National Hockey League players.

The highlight for many was meeting past and present hockey idols. Jesse Vandenbrand, 7, could barely contain his excitement as he waited in line to meet NHL players, particularly Curtis Lazar, who grew up in Vernon and plays for the Ottawa Senators.

“He plays on my favourite team,” Jesse said.

Others enjoyed sitting in beach chairs while listening to Vernon native Andrew Allen set the mood with his music.

Julie Bolin, who moved back to Vernon just two weeks ago, attended the event with her family and enjoyed that it was raising money for a good cause — the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.

“I really think its important communities do things like this. It brings people from all walks of life together,” Bolin said.
