KELOWNA - The City of Kelowna has announced the purchase of a piece of lakeshore property that will allow for the creation of a new beachfront park.
Mayor Colin Basran says the city has spent $12 million acquiring the property located on Lakeshore Drive near Lexington Road.
"This will create a legacy for our community for generations," Basran says.
He says the new beach park, while still several years from completion, will be comparable in size to Rotary Beach.
The mayor says city staff alerted council to the potential opportunity to buy the parcel, which was sold on the open market.
"We jumped on it right away," Basran says.
The purchase will be funded through city's development cost charge program and park reserve.
