Members of a Christian group were outside Rutland Senior Secondary School in Kelowna handing out bibles and pamphlets during students’ lunch hour today.

A student posted a photo of one of the pamphlets from the Fellowship of Christian Farmers Canada on social media.

The Central Okanagan school district’s superintendent Kevin Kardaal said the pamphleteers weren’t on school property and when the principal asked them to move further from the school they complied.

“These are young teenagers, they have minds of their own. We went out and said it's not appropriate to be here, move it further down the road. But we live in a free society. People have a voice, and they certainly weren't on school property. If they were on school property, that would have been an issue,” Kardaal said.

In April the provincial government announced new legislation giving police the authority to arrest or ticket anyone impeding access, disrupting educational activities or attempting to intimidate anyone within 20 metres of school grounds.

The school district said this kind of pamphleting isn’t common.

Kardaal said a group called Action Canada has previously handed out pamphlets about Sexual Orientation and Gender Education programming at the high school, but they were also moved at least 20 metres from school grounds.

The Fellowship of Christian Farmers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
