Child dies when UTV falls through thin lake ice: Williams Lake RCMP

A young child died after falling through thin ice near Williams Lake this past weekend.

Williams Lake RCMP were called to Tyee Lake at 5:19 p.m. on March 23, according to an RCMP media release.

A UTV, or utility task vehicle also known as a side-by-side, was travelling on the lake, fell through the ice and a young child died.

RCMP want to remind the public that while ice might look safe to travel on as mercury rises the ice melts and makes it unsafe.

“We were sadly reminded of how fast a fun activity can quickly turn into a tragedy,” Williams Lake RCMP said in the release.

Police are assisting the BC Coroners Service which is conducting the investigation.

Police will not be releasing any more details about the incident.
