This summer, residents can try their luck with chicken poop.

Lake Country’s Oyama neighbourhood is expected to see upwards of 2,000 visitors next month for the much-anticipated Oyama Fun Day.

The event, known for its more than 40-year history in the community, has been cancelled the last few years due to the pandemic but is returning June 5, said Oyama Community Club president Nick Clements.

“I think it’s like one of the only community parades. It’s lakefront and a full day of farm-based activities. It’s just a full-on, cool experience where we block off the street and the whole community comes together and you feel that community spirit,” he said.

The events start at 8 a.m. for a pancake breakfast and silent auction. The fun day’s main attraction will be the parade at 11 a.m., which will travel along Oyama Road from Gatzke's Orchard. Other parts of the day include a farmer’s market, firefighter barbeque, a kid’s zone, dog agility show, live music.

At 1:30 p.m., visitors can partake in chicken-poop bingo where chickens poop on a large bingo mat to determine the winner. Tickets for chicken-poop bingo are sold throughout the morning prior to the event, he said.

Those who want to be involved in the parade can contact the club through their website, he said.

Typically, they’ll get plenty of B.C. residents, especially from across the Okanagan, travel to see the event.

The Oyama Community Club has existed for more than 100 years, beginning in 1914.

“It’s pretty historic and pretty well known,” Clements said. “It started from being an agricultural hub and it was a good way for farmers to get together. They used to have big things like toilet races on the lake and big events on the lake which we don’t do anymore because of safety and regulations but it was quite the item on the event calendar for sure.”
