As if flying through the sky on an ultralight trike isn’t exhilarating enough, this Kamloops flier wanted to take it to the next level.
In a video posted to Jan Nademlejnsky’s YouTube channel, the experienced flier demonstrates a flight completely in reverse. After modifying the engine, Nademlejnsky backs up down the runway and takes off into a completely backwards flight, using GPS navigation to help guide him.
During the video, Nademlejnsky notes that he doesn’t believe any such thing has been done before, and adds that the landing may be "interesting."
In his description of the video, Nademlejnsky explains how his particular aircraft is better suited than most for reverse flight, as his trike’s wings are "tight like drum and there is not a single wrinkle and flutter."
Nademlejnsky notes some of the difficulties that arise when modifying the engine to run in reverse.
“Reverse running engine also produces backward force, because the (propeller) is running in reverse. This is not very efficient way due to the prop leading and thicker edge now becoming trailing edge,” Nademlejnsky says on the video description.
