A charity hockey tournament in Kelowna is pairing amateur players with NHL pros to support youth homelessness prevention.

Hockey Helps the Homeless has partnered up with BGC Okanagan to run a charity tournament at the MNP Centre on April 5, according to a press release.

“Participants in this one-day charity tournament are treated like pros, playing alongside hockey legends, while making a significant impact on the lives of the youth served by BGC Okanagan,” BGC Okanagan engagement coordinator Richelle Leckey said in the release.

“Net proceeds from the tournament will support youth who access BGC Okanagan’s low-barrier services; our shelter diversion and Upstream Kelowna programs,” Leckey said.

The tournament features former Vancouver Canuck Neil Eisenhut, as well as other well-known retired NHL players.

Individual players and teams have until Feb. 16 to sign up for the tournament.

Each player will get the NHL experience; playing three games with at least one former pro on their team, personalized jerseys and socks, a participant gift, a draft night reception, and free food and drinks on game day.

“Hockey Helps the Homeless is a nationally registered charity that coordinates and executes one-day charity hockey tournaments where people of all genders get a chance to play with hockey greats while raising funds to address the needs of the estimated 250,000 people experiencing homelessness in Canada every year,” the release said.
