Harper speaks to Ukrainian counterpart by phone as tensions run high in Crimea

OTTAWA - A government spokesman says Prime Minister Stephen Harper talked with his Ukrainian counterpart today by telephone.

Harper spoke to Arseniy Yatsenyuk from Toronto says a Twitter posting by Jason MacDonald, Harper's director of communications.

Canada has recalled its ambassador to Russia for consultations and, along with some major allies, has suspended preparations for the G8 summit that is to be held in Russia in June.

Tensions are running high in Crimea as Russia threatens to seize a Ukrainian warship.

Russia's military invasion of the peninsula is sparking concern in European capitals as diplomats meet in Brussels, Kyiv and Geneva.

Two Conservative MPs returned from Ukraine on Sunday after taking part in a visit led by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.
