TORONTO - Five things to watch this week in Canadian business:
Telecom talks: Movers and shakers in Canada's telecommunications sector will gather in Toronto for a three-day conference beginning Monday. Maxime Bernier, who is vying for the Conservative leadership, and federal privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien are among the speakers.
Valeant: Hoping the worst is behind it, the Quebec-based drug giant will report its delayed first-quarter earnings on Tuesday. On Friday, the company defaulted on some of its debt because it had yet to file the results.
Earnings: A number of companies in the retail sector report their first-quarter results this week, including Dollarama, Lululemon, Sears Canada and Hudson's Bay. The Bay recently announced it was planning to open up to 20 stores in the Netherlands, which would mark its first expansion outside Canada in the company's nearly 350-year history.
Coal conference: The Coal Association of Canada is holding its annual three-day conference in Vancouver starting Wednesday. The industry has been battered by slumping prices, though some are hoping that the oversupply in the market may be easing.
Jobs: Statistics Canada will come out with its jobs report for May on Friday. As of late, the country's labour market has been stuck on neutral, with a national unemployment rate of 7.1 per cent. Alberta has seen a gradual climb in its unemployment rate in recent months and will be one of the provinces to watch.
