British Virgin Islands ousts ruling party for new premier

TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands - Voters in the British Virgin Islands have ousted the ruling party and elected a new premier to oversee a Caribbean territory that is one of the world's top offshore trust jurisdictions.

Andrew Fahie of the Virgin Islands Party was sworn in on Tuesday after his party won eight of 13 seats in Parliament in Monday's elections. The National Democratic Party that had held office for eight years won just three seats.

The British overseas territory of some 30,000 people is the nominal home to more than 500,000 companies. Fahie has promised to boost the tourism sector and run a financially transparent government as the island continues recovery from Hurricane Irma.

Fahie previously served as minister of education and health.
