An emergency shelter may be replaced with a car wash if Kamloops city council agrees with the move.
The owners of the former Greyhound station at 725 Notre Dame Dr. in Kamloops are looking to demolish all of the existing buildings on the site and replace them with an automated car wash, according to a report to city council, May 9.
Zen Group Inc. is planning a drive-thru automated car wash with eight outdoor vacuums for drivers.
Even if it gets council's approval, the project won't start until the shelter lease expires up to two years from now.
Canadian Mental Health Association currently operates the Merit Place shelter at the location. It opened in the spring of 2022.
Initially the plan was to close the shelter in March, but BC Housing extended the lease for up to two years. The mental health association plans to operate the shelter until March 2024, when another operator is expected to take over for the following year.
The shelter is the largest in the Kamloops with space for 50 people out of the nearly 200 available shelter beds in the city.
Council will consider the development application for the car wash its meeting on May 9.
