Candy Cane Lane returning to Kelowna for another year

An annual holiday event that spreads Christmas cheer through a Kelowna neighbourhood is returning once again.

Residents along Collison Road, Gramiak Road and Mary Court in Rutland will be setting up thousands of lights this weekend in order to prepare for Candy Cane Lane. The annual event allows residents to view the many holiday displays and also fundraises for the Women’s Shelter and Freedom’s Door.

John Sharhon, spokesperson for the event, said organizers have received an overwhelming response after they put out a request this week on social media for help to set up Christmas lights as some of the older residents along the block are unable to.

Help will arrive this Saturday and Sharhon said social distancing measures will be in place. The event is set to begin Dec. 1 and will continue throughout the month until January.

Block organizers are hoping to have even more lights up this year, as a pick-me-up amid the pandemic.

“This year of all years let’s go out with something normal that we’re not all shaking in our booties about,” Sharhon said.

Organizers expect to see thousands of visitors this year, and Sharhon warns visitors to maintain a safe social distance while coming to the display.

“This year exercise common sense and avoid crowding,” he said.
