Canadian retailer Swimco says 'sea you later' to customers

Swimco is the latest Canadian retailer to announce it's closing its doors.

“It’s time we say, sea you later,” it said on its website. “After 45 years in business, Swimco must close its doors. Thank you for all the support and memories you gave us during this adventure. Canada is a country built on family business, and with that drive and determination we will see bluer skies and greener seas in the future.”

The store's retail locations closed earlier this month, including the store in Kelowna's Orchard Park Mall.

On June 11, Swimco Aquatics Supplies Ltd. and Swimco Partnership each filed a notice of intention to make a proposal pursuant to section 50.4(1) of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. It made an assignment into bankruptcy effective Oct. 10.

At that time all retail locations closed. Swimco’s online store will remain open, however all sales are final, and the Swimco Group will not be accepting gift cards and/or any returns from purchases.

Canadian companies such as Reitman's Canada Ltd., Aldo Group and Mendocino Clothing Co., have all filed for some sort of protection under bankruptcy laws.

Swimco opened its first store in Calgary in 1982.
