Canada Day killing trial to resume in Kelowna in July

On July 1, 2018 the Kelowna RCMP received reports of a violent altercation. Police responded to the vicinity of the Queensway bus loop where they discovered 23-year-old Esa Carriere on the ground in grave condition suffering from life threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The trial of two Kelowna men accused of a 2018 Canada Day killing should wrap-up by summer.

Nathan Truant and Noah Vaten are charged with manslaughter for their part in causing the death of Esa Carriere and their trial carried on for several weeks. After going long, it adjourned earlier this month so all involved could figure out when it could resume again.

A representative from the B.C. Prosecution Service said the trial has been rescheduled for July 26. Two days have been set to conclude the trial.

The original Crown prosecutor, however, won’t be there.

The B.C. Provincial Court appointed several lawyers to the bench, and Crown counsel in this case, Martin Nadon, was among those listed.

He finished presenting substantial evidence in his case by Friday, March 12, but his new role will begin before the trial concludes.

Nadon relied upon witness testimony, DNA, CCTV footage from cameras across the city, as well as RCMP testimony, to show that Vaten and Truant were among a group of people who fatally injured Carriere after chasing him down.
