KELOWNA - UBC’s Visiting Author series starts New Year with celebrated Canadian poet

UBC’s Visiting Author series rings in the New Year with an evening of poetry featuring celebrated Canadian poet Camille Martin. Martin will read from her works on Wednesday, January 14, 7 p.m. at the Okanagan Regional Library, 1378 Ellis St., Kelowna.

Martin is the author of four collections of poetry: Looms (2012), Sonnets (2010), Codes of Public Sleep (2007), and Sesame Kiosk (2001).

She has performed her poetry in more than 30 cities in Canada, the United States, Ireland, France, and the United Kingdom.

Critic Rob McLennan praises Looms for the "fearlessness that permeates the entire work." And Steve Spence, for Stride Magazine, writes of its "painterly, noir feel, alienated and penumbral, taut yet expansive. Impressive and addictive."

Martin earned a master in fine arts degree in poetry from the University of New Orleans and a doctorate in English from Louisiana State University. She lives in Toronto.

The Visiting Author series is sponsored by UBC’s Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, UBC Okanagan campus Bookstore, Okanagan Regional Library, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

More Visiting Author evenings are planned in 2014 featuring acclaimed Canadian authors and poets. These include:

- Wednesday, January 22 – Don McKay, lauded as Canada’s foremost eco-poet and author. McKay is the 2007 winner of the prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize, has won two Governor General Literary Awards for Poetry and is co-founder of Brick Books.

- Tuesday, February 11 – Mariko Tamaki, award-winning Canadian artist and writer who has produced several works of both traditional written fiction and non-fiction.

- Wednesday, March 12 – Gerry Shikatani, Canadian poet who has authored several books of poetry, including The Port’s Seasonal Rental (2011 Mercury Press).
