The Latest: Arrest follows California neighbourhood fire

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - The Latest on the overnight fire that damaged multiple homes in Southern California beach city (all times local):

2:45 p.m.

A man has been arrested in connection to a fire that damaged multiple beachfront properties in Southern California early Thursday.

Hermosa Beach police originally detained 27 -year-old Michael Christopher Kotva as a person of interest after seeing him running from the direction of the fire.

A city press release says he has since been booked at the Hermosa Beach Police Department jail. It's not clear if he has an attorney.

The fire turned a residential construction site into an inferno and four nearby homes in the tightly packed neighbourhood were damaged.

Los Angeles County arson investigators are working on determining the cause.

Six people were displaced.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries.

A raging overnight fire in a residential construction site damaged four other homes on a Southern California beachfront.

The blaze erupted shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday in Hermosa Beach among tightly packed multi-story residences.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze after about an hour.

KABC-TV reports the cause of the fire remains under investigation but a person was detained at the scene.
