It’s an extra-active springtime for B.C. Wildfire with the first two wildfires of note getting classified this weekend.
The two fires are located in the Cariboo Fire Centre – there’s the Lost Valley Road wildfire at 113 Hectares, and the Dripping Water wildfire at 150 Hectares. Human activity is the suspected cause of both, according to B.C. Wildfire.
“This is a busy spring,” Madison Dahl, fire information officer with Cariboo Fire Centre said.
Crews are dealing with the “spring dip,” which is the time of year after the snow has melted but the vegetation hasn’t turned very green yet, Dahl said.
“So there is fuel available.”
B.C. Wildfire crews also responded to a wildfire near Merritt last night, albeit it is not considered a wildfire of note. The Snake Road wildfire was reported to be burning five kilometres north of the city and was estimated to be 20 hectares as of April 29.
"... fire growth is being influenced by on site winds," B.C. Wildfire said in a Facebook post. "Personnel are on site along with the Lower Nicola Fire Department, Merritt Fire Rescue Department and one piece of heavy equipment. Airtankers are also on site providing additional support to ground personnel, and additional aerial support is en route."
Highway 97C was closed between Logan Lake and the Highway 8 junction as a result.
