Burn victim found in downtown Vernon park dies in hospital

Justice Park in Vernon.

A person who was burned at a downtown Vernon park last week died in hospital later the same day.

Police haven't said whether it's been deemed a homicide, but they don't believe it was a random attack either.

"Although a full determination surrounding criminality has not yet been made, the circumstances leading up to the person’s death are being considered suspicious in nature at this time," Vernon North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in a media release.

"Early indications are that this is an isolated incident and not a random attack and there is no risk to the public that we are aware of."

The victim was taken to hospital from Justice Park at the corner of 27 Street and 30 Avenue directly across the street from the courthouse at around 6:30 a.m., June 23, and died later that day.

Police have not identified the victim citing respect for the privacy of their family.

"We are asking motorists who were driving in the area of Justice Park between 6 a.m., and 6:40 a.m., on Friday, June 23, to check for dash cam footage and contact police if you have it," Const. Terleski said.
