GRAND FORKS - The body of a missing Australian man, who had been living in Kelowna, has been found and identified.

The body of Owen Kiernan Rooney, 24, was found June 10, 2017 by members of the Grand Forks Search and Rescue Unit who were training near the bottom of a steep cliff near the base of Hardy Mountain, according to a media release from the B.C. Coroners Service.

The electrician from Australia went missing on Aug. 14, 2010 near Mount Baldy. He left Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks that night leaving his belongings behind.

“He had been hitchhiking back to Kelowna where he was living after a trip to the Shambala Music Festival near Salmo. Despite extensive searches at the time, he could not be located,” coroner Barb McLintock says in the release.

Cause of death has not been released.

Rooney family spent more than six months in Canada following his disappearance and have been notified of his death.

“The B.C. Coroners Service would like to thank the Grand Forks RCMP and members of the search and rescue teams who, over a period of almost seven years, never gave up on trying to discover what had happened to Mr. Rooney,” McLintock says.
