Kathy Beck has been driving Sun Peaks Road from her home in Whitecroft to her job at the resort for over two decades and has seen a lot of different wildlife during her travels.

Beck saw something last night, May 8, she's never seen before. It was a black fox trotting into a clearing with a large rabbit in its mouth.

She and her son stopped in the middle of the road to snap a few photos.

“We saw it run across the street but didn’t know what it was at first,” she said. “Sure enough it was a black fox with dinner in its mouth, we guess taking it to feed babies.”

She said while foxes are common in the Sun Peaks area, she’s only spotted a black one a couple of times over the years, and has never seen one with a rabbit in its mouth. She posted the photos to social media and got a big response.

“The rabbit was almost as big as the fox,” she said. “People are saying it’s either a snowshoe hare or a jack rabbit.”

Beck said she feels privileged to have seen the fox and is happy to share the photos.

“No one gets to see that around here, I was in the right place and the right time,” she said. “I believe they call it a silver tip fox, it’s a majestic, beautiful creature.”

Foxes can come in all different colours, with the most common colour being red or orange, according to Fauna Facts. The silver and black colour can happen to a red fox, and when this colouration occurs the tail will usually be white.
