Rally drivers are rolling into Kelowna as they get ready for the Big White Winter Rally race happening this Saturday.
Twenty-six rally drivers from Canada and the U.S., including some big names like Jason Bailey, will compete in the race in and around Big White Ski Resort.
The rally cars are on display at the ski resort today, Dec. 8, and the race is tomorrow.
“Everybody will be running the same stages, but there are different brackets. Some people are entered in the regional and others on the national,” Rally BC organizer Fawn Hall says.
“The first drivers are released at two-minute intervals and the first cars spectators will be seeing will be the most competitive cars and the ones towards the end of the race will be the ones who are the less competitive, regional entries.”
There will be two spectator points, one is the Black Forest official spectator point available from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and the other is the Gem Lake spectator Point from 2:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. To access the latter, spectators will have to drive part of the stage road so they must arrive early and plan to stay there for the entirety of the race as access to the exit road will mostly be inaccessible.
There won't be livestream and the only way to see it is to travel up the forestry roads.
“I run an in-car GPS scoring and navigation system called RallySafe which people can watch to get live-time information about what’s happening but it’s not filmed,” Hall says. “We’ll film in short clips and post in bits and pieces on social media... so the only way to really see it is to be there.”
The event goes from 6 p.m., Dec. 8, until 8 p.m., Dec. 9, at and around the Big White ski resort.
