KELOWNA - The redevelopment of Kelowna’s oldest shopping mall into a multi-tower planned community has hit a snag.
Kelowna council deferred the adoption of a comprehensive development plan for the site at Gordon Drive and Harvey Avenue over concerns about changes from the original plan presented in January.
While council put off the vote on the development plan, it did agree to let the developer Graham Lee proceed with construction of a 22-storey tower on Sutherland Avenue at the southeast corner of the site.
Should it reach full build-out, the site would eventually see as many as 15 low- and high-rise buildings and include an urban park with a full-sized hockey rink that doubles as an amphitheatre in the summer.
The tallest high-rise in the centre of the site would reach 26-storeys, with smaller buildings on the perimeter of the site.
Capri Mall is Kelowna’s oldest shopping centre and used to be on the edge of town when first constructed in the late 1950s.
The developer has agreed to continue work on the comprehensive development plan to assuage their concerns.
