PENTICTON - Rick Thorpe and Yasmin John-Thorpe have made a major contribution to the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation.

The couple have donated $30,000 to buy equipment for the new hospital patient care tower which begins construction next spring, according to a media release.

The couple recall early lessons on the principle of giving back.

Rick, who served three terms in office for the B.C. Liberals, recalls being told early in life to “help the needy, not the greedy,” while Yasmin remembers her parents bringing homeless people into their residence, where they were given a shower, clean clothes and food, the release says.

Yasmin is a co-founder of the Penticton Writers and Publishers and headed up the South Okanagan Raise-a- Reader program.

The couple founded the Rick and Yasmin Thorpe and Friends Scholarship Fund, which has distributed $125,000 to local students attending Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan.
