Cyclists need not worry about bike theft if they're heading to the Kamloops Farmers' Market this year.
The City is hosting a bike valet service for at the market each Saturday this season, along with select days during the Memorial Cup tournament, according to a City of Kamloops news release.
“As e-bike use continues to grow, driven in part by their ability to reduce barriers to biking like topography and distance, we see the need and demand for secure bike parking increasing,” climate and sustainability manager for the City, Glen Cheetham, said in the release.
With a $23,500 donation from New Afton Mine, the service includes bike racks, tents and volunteers to watch over the secure bike space, the City said. Like a coat check, bikes are tagged and owners get a claim stub to retrieve their bike again.

New Afton's Community Investment Fund spurred the valet service for the season, but it's also maintained through sponsorship from BC Hydro. It's not yet clear how much the valet service will cost over the season.
The Kamloops Cycling Coalition is collaborating with the City to continue the service, which helped launch the valet program at different events last year. The service started at the famers' market last month.
“A spin-off of a people-led solution to enhancing bike security is the community conversations it creates about cycling in Kamloops, hopefully fostering a commuter cycling culture that builds upon our love for recreational biking,” cycling coalition board member Deb Alore said in the release.
