B.C.'s police watchdog investigating multi-vehicle crash that closed highway in West Kelowna

WEST KELOWNA - The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate whether the actions of the RCMP contributed to a four-vehicle crash on Highway 97 that closed the route for hours yesterday and sent one man to hospital.

The incident began shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 23, when police spotted a driver who was prohibited from driving as he crossed the Bennett Bridge towards West Kelowna, according to an RCMP media release.

An officer in a marked vehicle tried to stop the driver as it took the exit to Westside Road but it continued back onto the highway where it was involved in a collision with three other vehicles near Boucherie Road.

One of the drivers was trapped and later taken to Kelowna General Hospital with serious injuries. The drivers of the other three vehicles were not seriously injured.

The Independent Investigation Office will look into all aspects of the incident to “determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries,” the release states.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call Kelowna Regional RCMP at 250-768-2880.
