B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot and wounded by police in the Barriere area last night.

In a press release, the B.C. RCMP said it has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia of an incident in Louis Creek near Barriere where one man was shot and injured.

Highway 5 was closed for hours overnight due to the police incident.

Just before 10 p.m., May 20, Barriere RCMP officers were called to the 2900-block of Highway 5 for a report that a man had been dropped off on the side of the road and picked up what appeared to be a weapon.

Police officers found the man, and an interaction occurred between the man and officers.  Shots were fired by police and the man was injured, according to the RCMP. RCMP officers were not injured in the interaction.

Officers began first aid until BC Emergency Health Services arrived to transport the man to a hospital, according to the RCMP.

The IIO is investigating police actions in this incident, according to a press release on its site, and the RCMP's Southeast District General Investigation Section is a conducting a criminal code investigation.

The RCMP will not release further information on the incident.
