While far from great, the number of people in hospital and in intensive care units moved in the right direction over the weekend.

The number of people in hospital with a positive COVID test dropped to 803 today, Feb. 14, from 846 on Friday. The number of people who are sick enough to require intensive care dropped to 119 from 136 on Friday.

Those are still high enough to put stress on the B.C. health-care system but those are the lowest numbers in almost a month.

About half the of people in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not in there because of COVID, but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.

There were 2,701 new cases of COVID cases recorded in B.C. over the weekend, with 1,151 listed on Saturday, 883 on Sunday and 667 in the last 24 hours, according to a Ministry of Health news release issued today, Feb. 14.

Of the new cases, 676 were in the Interior Health region, 783 in Fraser Health, 495 in Vancouver Coastal, 423 on Vancouver Island and 324 in the Northern Health region.

The real number of cases is estimated to be three to four times higher because many people infected with COVID are not getting tested or take rapid tests that are not recorded in these figures.

There were 17 more deaths, including nine in Interior Health, bringing the pandemic total to 2,764.

The vaccination rate for people over the age of 12 stayed at 93.1% with at least one dose but climbed slightly to 90.5% with at least two doses and rose to 52.7% with three doses.
