VERNON - Vernon has been selected as the host city for the 2022 B.C. Winter Games.

Over 2,100 athletes, coaches, managers, and officials — taking part in 19 sports — will be in Vernon for the games from Feb. 24 to Feb. 27, 2022 according to a B.C. government media release. Vernon has previously hosted the games in 1992 and 2012.

“Greater Vernon has been a tremendous host of the B.C. Games throughout our 40 year history,” B.C. Games Society president and CEO Kelly Mann says in a media release. “The skills and expertise of volunteers will showcase the community once again and welcome the best young athletes in the province for what is sure to be an exceptional experience.”

The City of Vernon has hosted major sporting events before, including the 2014 RBC Cup, the 2011 Cross Country Skiing World Masters Cup and the annual Funtastic Sports Music Festival.

Athletes from nine to 19 years of age will take part in the games, with the average age being 14.

The province says the B.C. Winter Games is expected to have a $1.6 million economic impact in Vernon.

Penticton is hosting the 2016 B.C. Winter Games.
