B.C. teacher makes racist comments, lies, yells at kids, gets suspended

A B.C. teacher who made racist comments about other teachers, lied on his resumé and yelled at students has been suspended for four weeks.

According to a Jan. 12 B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, Brent Alexander Daniel made several racist comments about black teachers while working at an unnamed independent school in the fall of 2022.

At one point he said, "you can take the Haitian out of Haiti, but you can’t take Haiti out of the Haitian," in reference to another teacher who was carrying items out of the school.

On one occasion, he stood between two black teachers and asked, "'What do you call this?' and then said 'an Oreo.'"

When he saw a black colleague wearing a face mask he said "I’d better put away my valuables." When he was questioned on why he said that he replied "a black man wearing a mask."

Once when holding a bottle of vitamins he gestured toward a colleague and said "here, you’ll need these when your HIV gets unbearable."

Following the comments, the unnamed school which is operated by a First Nation, put him on probation for three months.

And he wasn't completely honest with the school in the first place.

The decision says when Daniel applied for the job at the independent school in September 2022, he left off his resume that he'd worked for the Peace River South School district the year before.

And things didn't go too well for the teacher while working at the Peace River South School District.

The decision says in 2021 Daniel grabbed the hood of a Grade 8 student's hoodie after the student threw a "soft" bouncy ball at him.

The student fell over and Daniel shouted at him telling the student he wasn't hurt and that he was "milking" it.

"As a result of Daniel grabbing (the) student's hood, there was a red mark on the student's neck and (the) student had pain in one elbow," the decision reads. "(The) student felt scared and sad as a result of Daniel’s conduct."

Following the incident, Daniel was suspended without pay for 10 days and transferred to a different school within the district.

At the independent school, Daniel continued with a similar pattern of behaviour.

In November 2022 he yelled at more students and in one incident was described as being "aggressive" by another teacher.

And more incidents followed.

He slammed a door and used obscenities in front of his student when told he couldn't borrow the school's truck to drive home.

On another occasion when students were hiding from him under a stack of chairs he yelled at them and then kicked the chairs "very" hard.

"The students were afraid the chairs would fall on them," the decision reads.

The independent school then fired him and reported his behaviour to the teaching regulator.

Daniel signed a consent resolution admitting to his actions.

The regulator suspended his teaching licence for four weeks.

"Daniel failed to model appropriate behaviour expected of an educator, particularly in responding to, or resolving. conflict," the Commissioner said. "Daniel’s actions jeopardized the physical and emotional safety of students, particularly the students at the Independent School who were very young and who lived in a community which has a long experience of trauma from colonialism."

The Commissioner goes on to say that Daniel's comments to his Black colleagues damaged the perception of the teaching profession.
