A B.C. elementary school teacher who was convicted for possession of child pornography has been banned for life from teaching.

In early 2021, Elazar Reshef was sentenced to 18-months house arrest after pleading guilty to one charge of possessing child pornography. He was 53 years old at the time of sentencing.

According to a recently published Nov. 23, 2021, B.C. Commission for Teacher Regulation decision, Reshef had his licence suspended in 2019 after police searched his home and seized computers and other electronic devices.

The decision says police found Reshef’s work laptop and his phone included photographs of students which were taken without their knowledge or their parents’ permission.

Reshaf lived in Surrey and taught at an elementary school in Delta, according to a Delta Optimist report.

Reshaf opted not to go to trial and instead pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of child pornography. Crown prosecutors stayed two charges of making or publishing child pornography.

The decision says Reshaf had been a registered teacher in B.C. since 1994, but following the conviction let his licence expire in 2021.

While the former elementary school teacher agreed he would not teach or work in any position in the kindergarten to Grade 12 education system in B.C. in 2020, the recent consent resolution summary closes the file.

Ultimately, Reshaf agreed to a lifetime ban from teaching in the province.
